The Helm of Awe, sometimes also referred to as the Helm of Aegishjalmur, was derived from the god of the ocean, Jotunheim, Aegir. Jotunheim was the land of the frost giants, one of the nine realms. The Helm of Awe first makes its appearance in the Poetic Edda when the dragon Fafnir claimed that his invincibility was because he bore the symbol. From his words:

The Helm of Awe

I wore before the sons of men

In defense of my treasure;

Amongst all, I alone was strong,

I thought to myself,

For I found no power a match for my own.

Taking a page from his book, Viking warriors during the Viking era would wear the symbol between their brows as a sign of strength during battle believing like the dragon Fafnir that this would bring them victory.
